A review of the Melitta Caffeo Solo Design Edition E950-222
Melitta makes a wide range of coffee machines and this Caffeo Solo piece is designed with the purist in mind. Not interested in a cappuccino, macchiato, latte machine with all the bells and whistles of a coffee shop? Want high quality simple black coffee to get you going in the morning? Then read on my coffee loving friend. Read on.
This stunning E950-222 bean to cup coffee machine is practical and fast to use. With three grind settings and three coffee strengths to choose from, you can make the right coffee for you whenever you want. There’s no point in spending hundreds on a coffee machine that can do everything if you just want delicious black coffee. This specialist machine does one thing and it does it really, really well.
While lots of coffee machines have umpteen buttons, several displays and more knobs and dials than would be appropriate on a spaceship, this Solo design is as minimalistic as possible. That means no messing about in the morning, just press a button and off you go.
With a cup warming feature, never again do you have to brew a delicious coffee only for it to spend all its heat energy warming the cup up and resulting in a lukewarm coffee for you as the first flakes of snow fall outside. Easy and fast to use, you’ll have a warm cup as the ideal companion for the freshly made liquid within it.
The two cup option is perfect for couples and families and saves time on busy mornings. Just tap the two cup button and you’re there – simple. The strength of the coffee is just the next button along and the neat LED display shows you what you’ve chosen. A child could operate this…which is great if you have children because they can bring it to you in bed!
To cope with varying cup sizes there’s a height adjustable spout making it perfectly practical for espresso cups or larger mugs. Everything on this machine is easy to clean and many parts are removable to make the job faster and easier.
Integrated Coffee Bean Grinder
As a bean to cup coffee machine, this takes fresh coffee beans and grinds just the right amount for each cup of coffee. This enables the fullest flavour to go into your daily coffee without any being wasted. The longer ground coffee hangs about for, the weaker its flavour until it eventually takes like that, shudder, instant coffee. Because bean to cup machines grind beans only when they need to, the flavour is captured and you get a truly enjoyable beverage.
A kitchen companion
Simple and practical with no excessive design, this Melitta Caffeo Solo should sit happily on any kitchen work surface and fit in. There are nicer looking, sleeker models such as the Jura ENA Micro 1 that just look…well…beautiful for their simplicity but this Melitta model doesn’t let down the side with its looks. It doesn’t shout about itself and if that’s what you’re looking for then great.
A question of price
Completely affordable and hopefully something that will stick around for years, this is a great way to see if you like the bean to cup coffee machine style. Anything too much cheaper than this and companies are compromising on quality and longevity which is only a false economy. To get a really delicious brew and to understand why bean to cup is so much better than pre-ground coffee machines, you need to be investing in something like this Melitta at the very least.
For the next step up from this with a price and functionality increase, do have a look at the Jura ENA Micro 1 which is comparable in its simplicity and ease of use but is just that bit more flexible and durable.
