REVEALED: The majority of cardboard coffee cups are NOT recyclable!
You might enjoy your take-out coffee from Starbucks or Costa every day and not feel so bad, I mean, you just stick your empty cup in the recycling bin right? It is cardboard after all. Eco-friendly right?
War on Waste founder Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall writes on the BBC News website,
‘The sorry truth is, next to none of them are recycled – and the even sorrier fact is that no-one’s taking responsibility for that, least of all the big coffee retailers who have created this takeout trash mountain.’
Fearnley-Whittingstall goes onto say that these ‘cardboard’ cups the coffee giants give out are actually infused with polyethylene, a material that cannot be recycled or separated from the cardboard.
What’s worse is that the cardboard itself isn’t from recycled materials in the first place and is made from virgin paper. Which is then chucked in a landfill!
What can you do about it?
Not only are take-out coffee cups a catastrophe for the environment, but coffee in coffee shops are incredibly expensive compared to home brewed coffee. The simple answer to this terrible waste of money and materials is to invest in a good home coffee machine.
High quality home coffee machines like the De’Longhi Magnifica use whole beans, grind the exact amount needed for the coffee you want and then brew and pour a delicious drink. Because it has such a high build quality and an excellent self-care programme, a good bean to cup coffee machine is a ONE-OFF purchase.
If you regularly buy coffee house drinks, within a year the machine will have paid for itself!
With a home coffee machine you control:
- The price
- The quality of beans
- The ethical sourcing of beans from fairtrade companies
- The reusable mug or cup
- Time spent making coffee
- The low/zero power consumption of modern home coffee machines
- Zero waste on milk and coffee
Yup. In places like Starbucks, the quantities of unused milk that are thrown out every day is HUGE. That’s because they never know exactly how much they’ll need, and they can’t risk not having enough, so they always have leftover milk. This gets thrown out.
Old coffee grounds also get thrown out and that’s before we’ve even thought about those terrible non-recyclable cardboard cups!
With a home coffee machine you control EVERYTHING. You won’t throw away excess milk because you just have your regular one litre milk in the fridge and you won’t throw away coffee grounds because bean to cup machines only grind the exact amount you need. As for take-out cups, you use your reusable plastic or metal to-go cup when you leave for the office in the morning and your favourite cup and mug when you’re enjoying your coffee at home!
Most modern coffee machines even have a 0 Watt button so that when they’re plugged in but not being used, they don’t use ANY power.
So yes – Zero Waste!
No longer can we believe that companies are taking care of the environment, no matter how many friendly pictures of trees or eco-friendly symbols they print onto their products.
We must take responsibility ourselves.
Home whole bean coffee machines are affordable, save money, save time, produce exquisite beverages and most importantly, don’t compromise the environment.
